An often overlooked aspect of design is how the shape and proportion of a room can change how it feels. This was a challenge for us, especially when presented with a project like this: a long, narrow living room. Starting on their own, our clients purchased a sectional and coffee table to help define the space of this room. When they realized that it still wasn’t working for them, they called us in for help.
A long, narrow room can often be awkward and difficult to work with. We started by creating two sitting areas: one area that the sectional provided and the second, a conversation area with two chairs and a table near the window. The floor, made of Brazilian cherrywood had a strong presence in the room which although beautiful, visually accentuated the length of the room.
To bring more cohesion to the space and tie everything together we helped the client select a painting which gave a strong graphic presence through its color palette and style. We added other strong elements like a black cabinet and colorful accessories. As a finishing touch we added sconces on each side of the painting to add brightness and style to the room. As a result, we were able to bring life to the room by complementing the sectional with color and light, bringing a visual unity to the space.
Not long after we completed this project, our clients sold their home. The buyers loved what we had done with this room so much that they paid our clients for the furnishings and kept the room as-is.
